Background

In early spring of 1996 at VMV Enterprises in Paducah, KY, SD60M #9297 was the first road locomotive to be painted into the new green and orange paint scheme of the newly formed Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway.

The paint scheme was an experimental one, which featured two different patterns of red separation stripes. There is a single red stripe on the engineer's side while there is a combination of stripes, two red and one blue on the fireman's side.

The locomotive travelled throughout the entire BNSF system, and the new company encouraged employees to call in their opinion about which paint/stripe pattern they liked best.

The locomotive's overall paint scheme was a great hit with the employees, and the paint scheme was then adopted by BNSF as its Heritage I paint scheme, although there were several modifications since #9297 was first introduced. Most notable was the change from red stripes to yellow ones, a different shade of green, and a different color used within the nose herald. Also #9297 does not have a herald, or logo, on the back of the locomotive.

Today, the locomotive continues to be in revenue service within its unique paint scheme on the vast railroad empire of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
