Background

Built in May 1929 as the David C. Shepard, it served as a buffet-lounge, complete with a barber shop on the famed Empire Builder. The Great Northern Railway purchased the car in February 1941, converted it to a coach, and renumbered is GN #1073. It was later configured into a parlor car in 1952 and again renumbered to GN #1085. Later on in its life, it was rebuilt into an Instruction Car, and in this configuration was numbered X-7853, and then renumbered B-2 in 1982. Burlington Northern then assigned the car as the B-12 Training Car in 1986. BN again changed the car's configuration in 1989 and named it the Deschutes River, and assigned in the roster to BNA #12. BNSF re-assigned the car to its roster to BNSF #60 on 10 September 1998. The car's accommodations include Staterooms A through D, which have queen sized beds. There is also a lounge area for seven people.
